"This image captures something deeply human – the need for connection after moments of reflection and duty. Just hours earlier, these young submariners had marched with solemnity and precision, paying tribute to those who had gone before them"

Black-and-white photo of five sailors in uniform drinking and smoking outside a building.

When London, England-based documentary and street photographer Chris Mozyro was walking through Westminster, one scene immediately caught his attention: a group of young submariners connecting just hours after taking part in a solemn remembrance ceremony.

The contrast between duty and friendship inspired Mozyro's From Salute to Cheers, a photograph that has won First Place in the Black and White category at the Pure Street Photography Awards 2026.
