Third victim of Galway pier tragedy remembered as 'amazing and kindhearted' young man who always had a smile

The ashes of one of three teenagers killed when their car plunged off a pier in Galway in the early hours of last Saturday are to be interned on Friday in Co Kilkenny.

Wojciech Panek, 17, from the medieval village of Graiguenemanagh, Co Kilkenny was due to turn 18 shortly and was undertaking an apprentice carpenter course in Galway.

Gardaí said they received a report of a car in the water at Menlo Pier located on the river Corrib on the outskirts of Galway city at around 2.40am.

Three teenagers were taken from the water and transferred to University Hospital Galway by emergency services.

Two of the teenagers were pronounced dead early last Saturday. They were named as 16-year-old John Keenan and Wojcieck Panek.

The third teenager, 19-year-old Christopher Stokes, died in hospital on Saturday afternoon.

Wojciech’s funeral details read on rip.ie : Wojciech Panek, Cois Na Bearu, Graiguenamanagh, Co Kilkenny. Loving son of Grzegoz and Katarzyna and brother of Kamil and Viktoria.

“Wojciech will be sadly missed by his heartbroken family and friends. Interment of ashes will take place on Friday February 17 at 2pm in Calvary Cemetery, Graiguenamanagh, Co Kilkenny.

Described as an ‘amazing and kindhearted’ young man who always had a smile, he was previously a pupil at St John’s Senior School in Kilkenny and later at Grennan College in nearby Thomastown, Co Kilkenny.

One mourner said: “Very sorry to hear of the tragic death of Wojciech, such a lovely, jolly, kind young man, taken too soon. Our hearts go out to the Panel family, at this unthinkable and heartbreaking time. Rest in peace young man.”

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who has information that can assist with the investigation to contact them on 091-538000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.

They are keen to speak to anyone who saw a 08 D blue Peugeot 308 in the area on Friday night.
