‘They couldn’t do it’: Houston teacher breaks down after discovering some of his high school seniors can’t read or write

An emotional video posted by a Houston high school teacher has become the flashpoint for a heated debate across online platforms about the state of contemporary public education in the U.S. The teacher was crying and shaking his head as he described how high school students in his class had severe problems with reading. He kept repeating, “They couldn’t do it,” as he sobbed.

The teacher in question, Darius Williams, took to TikTok with a raw admission that allegedly some 12th-grade students lack foundational literacy skills. The video quickly racked up millions of views and was shared by some of the biggest news publications in the country.
