These 8 Stores Offer The Best Discounts To Seniors

If you are over the age of 55, you are sitting on a goldmine of unclaimed grocery savings. While many national chains have quietly discontinued their senior discount programs in recent years, a handful of regional and national retailers have kept the tradition alive. These discounts are often the single best “coupon” you can use, offering a flat percentage off your entire order. However, they all operate on specific days of the week and require you to ask for them. Here are the eight stores where your age is your biggest asset in 2026.

1. Fred Meyer

This Pacific Northwest giant is a haven for seniors. On the first Tuesday of every month, shoppers aged 55 and older receive an additional 10% off select items. This includes private brand groceries, apparel, and home electronics. It is one of the few discounts that applies to general merchandise, making it the perfect day to buy household goods.

2. Harris Teeter

For shoppers in the South and Mid-Atlantic, Harris Teeter offers a 5% discount every Thursday for those aged 60 and up. You must link your VIC card to the senior discount program at the customer service desk once, and then the discount applies automatically at the register.

3. Fry’s Food Stores

A Kroger subsidiary popular in Arizona, Fry’s offers a 10% discount on the first Wednesday of every month for shoppers 55 and older. This discount is massive because it applies to most grocery items, allowing you to stock up on pantry staples for a significant chunk off the bill.

4. Hy-Vee

This Midwest favorite has a varying policy, but many locations offer a 5% discount on Wednesdays or Thursdays for shoppers aged 55+. Because Hy-Vee is employee-owned, the policy can vary slightly by store, so it is worth asking your local manager which day they honor the “Senior Citizen Discount.”

5. Weis Markets

Operating in the Mid-Atlantic, Weis Markets offers a highly competitive senior discount. Shoppers aged 60+ receive 10% off numerous participating private brand products on Tuesdays. This is a targeted discount on their “Weis Quality” products, which are already cheaper than name brands, leading to a double layer of savings.

6. American Discount Foods

For those in Arizona, this discount retailer offers a 10% discount every Monday for shoppers aged 62 and up. Since this store already specializes in clearance and scratch-and-dent groceries, taking an extra 10% off results in some of the lowest food prices in the country.

7. Concord Food Co-op

Co-ops are often overlooked, but they have great senior benefits. The Concord Food Co-op in New Hampshire, for example, offers a 15% discount on Sundays and Tuesdays for seniors 62+. Check your local food co-op, as many have similar aggressive discounts to attract older members.

8. DeCicco Family Markets

This New York-based chain offers a senior discount for shoppers 62+ on designated days, typically Wednesdays. You need to register for their Senior Card at the service desk. It is a classic, old-school perk that rewards loyalty in the local community.

If you are eligible for these discounts, plan your shopping trip around them. Saving 5% or 10% on a total bill is far more valuable than clipping coupons for specific items. It is essentially tax-free shopping just for showing your ID.
