Dalvin Cook officially became an unrestricted free agent when the Minnesota Vikings released him on Friday.
Will the Denver Broncos pursue the running back? The answer depends on who you ask.
When news broke that Minnesota was about to release Cook, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Broncos were expected to be among the teams set to show interest in the running back.
One day later, once the cut became official, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport called Denver a team that is “potentially willing to spend” when listing teams who might target Cook.
While the two big national media outlets have dubbed the Broncos a team to watch, locally, KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis has downplayed the possibility.
“[T]he Broncos do not appear to be in on newly set free running back Dalvin Cook,” Klis wrote on Sunday before adding, “Still, don’t be surprised if the Broncos add one more running back between now and the start of the regular season.”
So, who’s right — ESPN and NFL Network or 9News? It’s possible that both sides could be true.
Perhaps Denver did — as Schefter suggested — show interest in Cook, but maybe the team is not likely to sign him at the moment, as Klis reported. The holdup is likely money. The Broncos don’t have much salary cap space left so unless the team is willing to restructure other contracts, Cook would have to agree to a team-friendly deal if he signs with Denver.
At the moment, the Broncos seem unwilling to meet whatever Cook’s contact demands are. We’ll see if either side changes their mind in the coming weeks — training camp typically begins in late July.
