Esteemed traveling magazine and guide, Conde Naste Traveller, has marked out a 13th century Welsh castle as one of the most beautiful in Europe. Conwy Castle, on the banks of the River Conwy, encases the most complete set of royal residential rooms inhabited by the medieval monarchy anywhere in England or Wales and it was build for King Edward I in the 13th century.
Its battlements certainly attracted the publication' s writer who placed Conwy Castle amongst 25 other European fortresses, including Disney-inspiring Pena Palace in Portugal, which has yellow and pink towers and 'cartoonish' gargoyles, and the Palace of Versailles in France, the perfect image of 17th-century grandeur and opulence.
It should be no surprise that Wales features, having more castles per square mile than any other European country, the only surprise is that we have just one in the 26-long list.
