The Trailer for 2025's 'Superman' Has Dropped; A Look At the 2 Latina Superheroes that Are in It

The first trailer for 2025's 'Superman' is here and fans have already shown their excitement. More than a decade since the Man of Steel's last solo outing, many are eager to see the iconic character in a starring role again.

But the film also promises to feature other superheroes in the supporting cast to serve as a contrast to Superman, as well as to set up further projects in writer/director James Gunn's new DC Universe (DCU).

Two superheroes that are confirmed to appear are Hawkgirl, who will be played by Peruvian-American actress Isabela Merced ('Madame Web,' 'Alien: Romulus'), and Angela Spica/The Engineer, who will be portrayed by Venezuelan actress María Gabriela de Faría ('The Duel,' 'Deadly Class').

The version of Hawkgirl Merced will be portraying is Kendra Saunders, the third iteration of the character. Saunders is a young Latina who committed suicide. When her soul left her body, the soul of the original Hawkgirl, Shiera Saunders Hall, who is also her grandfather's cousin, entered it, but with almost total amnesia.

Saunders, possessed by Hall, has all of the former's memories and the latter's powers and fighting experience. She is super strong, has the ability to fly, and wields a mace made of a mysterious alien metal. She can be briefly be seen in action in the trailer.

Merced as Hawkgirl has been spotted on set along with her co-stars David Corenswet, Nathan Fillion, and Edi Gathegi, who will play Superman, Green Lantern, and Mr. Terrific, respectively.

Angela Spica is the second character to take up the mantle of The Engineer following the killing of the first one. Spica, a child prodigy and tech genius, inherited the original Engineer's technology after he died and has a body made of liquid metal that can solid objects of her choosing.

She has been seen in set photos with David Corenswet's Superman handcuffed in her custody escorted by some soldiers, implying that she will play more of an antagonistic role in the film.

The Engineer is traditionally a member of the superhero team, The Authority, a more rough-around-the-edges group than we are used to with superheroes as they often act in the interests of governments and are willing to use lethal force if necessary.

This could be the reason she is in conflict with Superman in the film, given Superman's honest nature and opposition to killing.

'Superman' flies into theaters on July 11th, 2025 and you can check the trailer out for yourself here.
