SCOTLAND’S 0-0 draw with Ukraine in Poland secured top spot in Nations League Group B1.
Steve Clarke’s side rounded off their campaign with a hard-earned point in Krakow and the result was important in more ways than one.
When the draw is made for the qualifying groups for the 2024 European Championships, to be held in Germany, Scotland will now be second seeds and should theoretically receive a kinder draw.
By topping the Nations League group, the national team have also guaranteed a play-off spot for the Euros, should they fail to qualify through the conventional route.
The success extends to the next Nations League campaign, too. As group winners, Scotland have been promoted to the ‘A’ band of the competition – and will be drawn alongside the continent’s heaviest hitters for the next edition of the tournament.
The other nations in the ‘A’ band are: Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Denmark, France, Israel, Italy, Germany, Hungary, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Serbia, Spain and Switzerland.
