Workers have been spotted at the top of Grey's Monument as they carry out maintenance on Newcastle's famous landmark.
Large wire fencing has been in place around the foot of the monument since Monday while contractors carry out work at the top of the 134ft column.
The council has confirmed that this involves replacing the mesh that fits into the handrails that surround the viewing platform to make it safe for visitors.
It comes as Grey's Monument opens to visitors this summer. During the tour with Newcastle City Guides visitors can go inside the column and climb the 164 steps to take in incredible views down Grey Street and the city centre.
A Newcastle City Council spokesman said: “As part of general maintenance to Grey’s Monument, our workers are redecorating the handrails at the top of the monument and renewing the mesh that fits onto the handrails.
"This is just to make sure that the Monument complies with all Health and Safety requirements before the visitor tours begin.”
The Monument is named after the second Earl Grey, Charles Grey, who was from the North East and was British Prime Minister in the 1830s. Grey's Monument is open to visitors on the first Saturday of each month until September 3 and bookings must be made in advance.
