The picturesque European town with its own theme park that's a £15 flight from Manchester Airport

With summer fast approaching, many people are starting to think about holidays. While some opt for an all inclusive resort where they can relax all day on a beach or by a pool, others prefer a city break and the chance to get out and explore the local area.

Like most things during the cost of living crisis, the price of travel has soared. Despite petrol prices coming down in recent weeks, the cost of rail tickets and flights remain high - but there are still cheap deals out there, if you know where to look.

We have discovered a destination that remains one of the cheapest on Skyscanner year round. It's not a famous capital city, or a Spanish island - but you can get there for as little as £14 from Manchester Airport - and the flight is just over 90 minutes.

Billund is a town in central Denmark and will probably be one of the brightest and most colourful places you'll ever visit. It has actually been dubbed the 'Capital of Children' - and for good reason.

It is known as the birthplace of LEGO bricks, and is also home to a LEGO factory which produces the lion's share of the world's bricks. Of the 7,000 or so people living there, around two thirds are said to work for the toy manufacturer.

And of course no birthplace of LEGO would be complete without its own LEGOLAND theme park. LEGOLAND Billund Resort boasts Europe's first LEGO Ferrari construction attraction where guests can build their very own LEGO Ferrari racing car.

But it's not all about plastic toy bricks - Billund is also full of history. Despite being very young, the town was founded in the 17th Century and there are many museums and galleries showcasing its past, such as Karensminde Agricultural Museum which features farm work in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Other attractions include Lalandia - Scandinavia's largest waterpark, Syvårssøerne’s Natural Landscape - a stunning nature reserve with a variety of trails for all skill levels, Skulpturpark - described as an 'eclectic fusion between nature and art', and Bindeballe Kobmandsgaard - a 130-year-old shop 15 minutes from the centre of Billund where you can discover oddities and rarities from around the globe.

According to Skyscanner, an average one-way flight in June 2023 will cost around £15, with returns available from the same price.
