The Job Nobody Applied For
You don't call them. You may not even follow them on Instagram. But when the day turns bad in that specific way, the kind where the air in the room feels wrong and your chest does something you can't explain, your mind goes to them. Not to what they would say. Just to them. The fact of them. The way they existed near you once, and how that felt like solid ground. This is a job with no title and no awareness on the part of the person holding it. They are living their life somewhere, maybe in the same city, maybe in Pune or Bengaluru or a town you've never visited, completely unaware that they are the person someone reaches for when everything else slips. They didn't sign up for this. They probably don't think about you at all, or not often. That asymmetry is the whole shape of the thing.
