The One Show interview with Idris Elba thrown into chaos as host Alex Jones mocks show blunders

An interview with TV and film heartthrob Idris Elba was thrown into chaos on The One Show, with host Alex Jones joking about the sound problems. Alex was interviewing Luther star Idris, 50, via a video link-up about his new film Luther: The Fallen Sun.

Idris is returning in the role of former Detective Chief Inspector John Luther in a movie version of the hit psychological crime thriller TV series Luther. He is slipping back into his signature overcoat for the iconic role that won him a Golden Globe and four Emmy nominations.

In the film, haunted by an unsolved murder, brilliant but disgraced London police detective Luther breaks out of prison to hunt down a sadistic serial killer. There was excitement as Idris joined Alex with co-host Alex Scott on Wednesday night (March 1) to speak about Luther's big-scale comeback coming to Netflix on Saturday, March 10.

But as they spoke on the BBC One chat show, it was evident that there was a delay between the time the studio presenters were speaking to their remote interviewee, leaving awkward pauses between the question and when his response arrived. Idris was speaking from the premiere of the film at BFI IMAX Waterloo in the heart of London to the presenters two miles away at Broadcasting House in Marylebone.

Alex Scott asked actor Idris about his comment that John Luther is the character 'most like him.' But when a silent gap followed she asked: "Have we lost you? Are you with us?" And as the question finally landed he answered: "Because he's patient, he has a lot of conviction and a bad temper."

Later as the pair wrapped up the interview they told him: "Have a brilliant time, good luck with it all. " But there was another pause as laughter could be heard in the studio.

After Idris eventually thanked them and asked them to let him what they thought of the film, Alex Jones cracked a joke about the delays. "Isn't it nice how there's a huge delay on the other side of London?" she quipped.

Fans were excited over the interview to learn that there are hopes of making Luther into a film franchise, like the James Bond and Jason Bourne movies. "Talk it into existence," Idris enthused.

He told Alex Jones after she posed the question. "If anyone can do it you can." Viewer @teenamassam tweeted: "Always a plus, no #Emmerdale so watching #theoneshow instead and up pops Idris Elba…" And VBG_10 said with an applause GIF: "Idris Elba: 'We do have the ambition to take it into a film franchise.'"
