Here is today's edition of The Nottinghamian:
Hello,
Today's edition of The Nottinghamian celebrates the successes of Nottingham businesses. From an award-winning chippy being shortlisted for another national award to bakery takeovers and restaurants opening in new locations.
It is a welcome sight after many shops, cafes and restaurants closed over the last few weeks. Plus we also have the very best street style of the day from a colourful couple.
Top 10
Having only been open for six months, a West Bridgford chippy is in the running for a prestigious national award. The Cod's Scallops, located at the £20m Wilford Lane retail park has been shortlisted in the top ten restaurants of the year in the National Fish & Chip Awards.
The sixth in the Cod's Scallops' chain, the business is no stranger to the awards. In 2020 the original Wollaton chippy, in Bramcote Lane, was crowned the best in the UK. As well as being a takeaway, the West Bridgford chippy has a 38-seater licensed restaurant with a vast menu offering up to 20 types of fish and shellfish such as salmon, monkfish, oysters, lobster and mussels. There are award-winning steak and Scale Ale pies plus all the usual chip shop favourites such as sausages, fishcakes, curry sauce and pickled eggs.
After hundreds of applications, the popular restaurant is the only fish and chip shop in Nottinghamshire to be shortlisted for the esteemed award, sponsored this year by Seafood from Iceland. The winner will be announced at The National Fish & Chip Awards, hosted by The National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), on February 28, 2023, at London's Park Plaza Westminster Bridge.
Fresh start
There's a new name, a new look and a reworked menu but all the familiar faces remain after a takeover of Sherwood's popular cafe and bakery, The Bakehouse. After changing hands it has become Good Honest Bakery, sporting a fresh coral frontage in Mansfield Road.
The new owner, Greg Campher, previously had close links with the business when it was run by Craig and Rosea Poynter, who quit to enjoy more family time. He has a stake in Outpost, the company that supplied the coffee from a roastery in Lenton and will continue to do so.
After a brief closure for redecoration, the cafe is back open with the former staff and is once again serving the bread it's renowned for and delicious cakes, all baked on-site. Greg said: "I didn't realise just how strong the community was in Sherwood. It's another level, more than I have experienced. Everyone is so interested to know what is going on and to come and support. All those things together, it's a really great opportunity to come in and be part of this community.
"The staff are just outstanding. They have been so positive in their approach and taking the challenge on, to take the reins and go with it. Megan [Outpost's head of operations] and I just looked at each other and said 'this is going to be great'." The business is open Tuesday to Saturday but once more staff have been hired it will be extended to seven days a week. Read more here.

Street style
This colourful couple were spotted in town today, standing out in their bright outfits. Naomi Wright and Euan Lees are from St Anns and both have a love for fashion. Naomi describes her style as "thrown together" but she likes the colour blue so that forms most of her outfits. Describing his style Euan said he takes a "pretty structured" approach and likes to use colour and pieces that work together that "come naturally" to him.
The 34-year-old coffee shop owners say they get their style inspiration from places they have been, music they listen to and TV shows and films they watch. They gave a shout-out to Wild Clothing in Hockley, where they source some of their vintage pieces. When asked to give one piece of style advice, Naomi said: "Wear good socks, socks can make an outfit." Euan added: "Do not be scared of using colour in your outfits, splash it on and see what works."

'Back to the roots'
Healthy food restaurant Clean Cut Kitchen is set to open a second location after its success in the Victoria Centre. The new restaurant, which, it is hoped, will open in four weeks' time, is in Pelham Street next door to Bodycraft, in the premises that was formerly occupied by Wired Coffee.
Founder Antonio Vendone said: "We are planning to take things back to the roots of where it all started as originally we were meant to be a takeaway concept offering an alternative way to have fast food or food on the go." The Victoria Centre Clean Cut Kitchen is a sit-down restaurant but the new venture aims to be a place for customers to call in and grab a meal prep or a smoothie.
Customers will be able to pre-order their meals through the website too while keeping an eye on what dishes are available. The dishes are designed to be mix and match with lots on offer. Dishes include jerk chicken on coconut rice with peas and kale, sweet potato cottage pie with greens, or a mouth-watering spicy peanut chicken with basmati rice. Read more here.
