‘2,000 queen ants in a suitcase’: Chinese man arrested for smuggling live ants in test tubes at Nairobi airport

A Chinese national has been arrested in Kenya after authorities discovered more than 2,000 live queen ants hidden inside his luggage at Nairobi’s main international airport. The unusual wildlife smuggling case unfolded at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, where security officers intercepted the passenger during a routine inspection before a flight to China. Investigators say the insects had been carefully packed inside test tubes and rolls of tissue paper designed to keep them alive during transport. The discovery has drawn attention to a growing underground trade in rare insects, with collectors around the world willing to pay high prices for exotic ant species capable of founding entire colonies.
