Here is today's edition of The Nottinghamian:

Hello,

In today's edition of The Nottinghamian we focus on heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury's offer to pay £25,000 to a local man for his gold cross and chain. It comes after the owner said it is the biggest in the UK and opened up to offers.

We will also discuss a new hotel and bar being given the green light as well as the latest addition to Sneinton Market. We have the latest on Cineworld's future plus I recommend somewhere you should try this weekend to relax from the hustle and bustle of the city.

£25,000 offer

Heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury has offered to pay £25,000 for the 'UK's biggest gold cross and chain' which a Nottinghamshire man has saved from being scrapped. Andreo Montanino, 33, purchased the item in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter after spotting it in the window of a bullion dealer.

Mr Montanino, from Trowell, believed the chain was going to be melted down but said that he had to stop this from happening in memory of his nan who was deeply religious, as the jewellery resembles Jesus Christ on the crucifix. He says the item will be auctioned in September but has already said Tyson Fury could be a potential buyer.

Mr Fury, known as The Gypsy King, responded to the story by saying that he would be prepared to pay £25,000 for the cross and chain. Writing on his Instagram story on Friday, August 19, Tyson Fury said: "Don't know who owns this but seen it online. I will give £25k for it." Read more here.

Green light

The site is a currently vacant plot on the east side of Mansfield Road, Carrington (Nottingham Post)

A new hotel and bar are set to be built on wasteland next to Mansfield Road in Carrington. The plans, which will see a hotel with 26 rooms and a restaurant/bar built on the site, have been given the green light. The site will also have a car park.

It is currently a vacant plot on the east side of Mansfield Road in the Mapperley Park and Alexandra Park Conservation Area. The area was once occupied by a hotel formed from a two-storey Victorian villa but this was demolished in 2005. The new building will be three storeys high with accommodation in the roof.

The ground floor will include a lounge, bar, kitchen, office and two bedrooms. A number of permissions have been granted for new-build hotels and apartments since the old hotel's closure, but none were implemented. Some objections were made about the current plan by neighbours, but the council found in favour of the applicant. Find out more here.

Recommendation

The Playwright venue on Shakespeare street. (Olimpia Zagnat)

Name: The Playwright

Address: 38 Shakespeare St, Nottingham NG1 4FQ

Cuisine: Artisan pizzas, beers and cocktails

Situated on the corner of the city, The Playwright overlooks the stunning Arkwright Building. The pub has a long-standing history with the city as Nottingham Forest was famously founded more than 150 years ago there. Today, the boozer has a retro feel with a mixture of vintage furniture and décor.

The Playwright is a nod to Britain's most celebrated writer and the interior reflects some of Shakespeare's works. The snug at the front is dubbed Gertrude's Gaff after Hamlet's mother, the toilets named Romeo and Juliet and the function rooms go by the name of Hamlet's Hideaway and Poets Corner. The pub has a homely feel with sofas and armchairs that you can sink into and spend hours there as well as two outside seating areas.

It is part of UK brewery giant Charles Wells and continues with its Pizza, Pots and Pints brand. They offer freshly made wood-fired artisan pizzas and terracotta pots bubbling with comfort food. The Playwright has a wide selection of cocktails as well as craft beers and guest ales. It really is the perfect place to sit and unwind away from the bustling city whilst feeling like you're in someone's grand living room.

Sneinton studio

The ever-growing Sneinton Market is set to welcome a new business in the form of a bespoke floristry studio. Ever Wild Floristry Studio offers a creative twist on floristry using fresh and dried flowers and is set to open in mid-September.

The brand has established itself online with a strong social media presence and fans were quick to spot the post about the new studio opening and have commented wishing the owner the best of luck with the new venture. Owner Tarnya Bruce moved back to Nottingham with her family after working in London as a dancer for ten years.

She got started in floristry during lockdown and this will be her first studio. Tarnya is excited to open it as she feels there is a real buzz about Sneinton as the units are starting to fill with independent businesses and looks forward to being a part of it. Read more about her new venture here.

Future in doubt

The Cornerhouse is home to Cineworld in Nottingham (Joseph Raynor/ Nottingham Post)

The major chain Cineworld, which has a cinema in the Cornerhouse, is expected to file for bankruptcy within weeks. The businesses' shares have plummeted after the reports.

Shares dived by two-thirds within minutes of reports by the Wall Street Journal that the world’s second biggest cinema business has hired lawyers from Kirkland & Ellis and consultants from AlixPartners to advise the bankruptcy process.

Cineworld has declined to comment. It comes two days after Cineworld said it is assessing options to shore up its finances after it blamed a “limited” film slate for weak audience numbers in recent months.

That’s all for this week
