At the eastern end of High Bridge sits one of Newcastle's most popular pubs - the Bacchus, a magnet for city-centre workers and weekend revellers.
It turns out, however, there have been three different pubs in the city centre named "the Bacchus" - after the Roman god of wine and pleasure. This was the second of them, photographed 35 years ago in October 1987.
It also stood on High Bridge - between 1971 and 2001 - before being demolished and rebuilt as the pub we know today higher up the street towards Pilgrim Street. Interestingly, during the demolition work, the area underwent archaeological investigations which revealed, among other things, evidence of a Bronze Age round house.
