The New Test of Corporate Purpose Is Credibility

Corporate purpose has entered a complicated phase. Sustainability commitments once offered brands an easy way to distinguish themselves. Now, environmental claims face regulatory scrutiny and public skepticism. The European Commission's new greenwashing rules, taking effect in September 2026, require environmental claims to be substantiated with verifiable information. The United States imposes civil penalties exceeding $50,000 per violation. The message for businesses is becoming difficult to ignore: a positive claim carries obligations.

The pressure reaches beyond environmental marketing. Social commitments, ethical sourcing, and community investment have all become part of how companies communicate their identity. Yet the more organizations rely on purpose to build trust, the more vulnerable they become when their public messaging outpaces their actual conduct. A campaign can attract attention in a matter of hours. Establishing whether its promises hold up takes considerably longer.
