The New Electric Porsche Cayenne S Hits The Sweet Spot

Porsche is looking to mirror the Electric Cayenne’s lineup with that of its gas-fueled counterpart. It’s a strategy already in place for the Macan, and now its bigger brother is following the same path. After the base and Turbo flavors were released last November, the Cayenne without a combustion engine is now adding a third member to slot between the existing versions.

The S still has dual motors and all-wheel drive, but combined output is dialed down to 536 horsepower. With launch control on, peak output rises to 657 hp. It may not be the king of the hill, but the electric Cayenne S still takes only 3.6 seconds to reach 60 mph and maxes out at 155 mph.

At the heart of the new flavor is the same 113-kWh battery pack with support for 400-kW charging. Provided you can find a suitable charging station capable of that kind of power, the battery can be replenished from 10 to 80 percent in less than 16 minutes. You’ll have to use the DC charging port on the driver’s side, as the one on the passenger side is reserved for AC charging.

Zuffenhausen put some effort into visually distinguishing the electric Cayenne S by installing slightly different front and rear fascias, with some of the pieces painted in Volcano Grey Metallic. In the United States, customers can pick from 13 colors and numerous options. There’s Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) and Active Ride suspension, not to mention ceramic-composite brakes and the Sport Chrono Package.

You’ll want the Sport Chrono Package to activate a push-to-pass function that unlocks 120 hp for 10 seconds. There’s even a built-in Track mode, although we can’t imagine many people taking such a large and heavy electric SUV onto a circuit. Debuting with the Cayenne S, but available on the other electric versions as well, is the Interior Style Package with a black-and-green two-tone cabin to complement the Mystic Green paint job. The green accents extend onto the doors, steering wheel, and dashboard to complete the look.

Before options, the electric Cayenne S costs $128,650 with destination fees included. That makes it $17,300 more expensive than the base model while undercutting the Turbo by a significant $36,700. Porsche will kick off deliveries in the U.S. by the end of summer.

Motor1's Take: It’s always good to have variety in a model’s lineup, and there’s likely more on the way for the electric Cayenne. For example, a coupe-styled variant with a sloped roofline is a matter of when, not if, and it should echo the lineup Porsche offers for the conventionally shaped SUV.

Whether customers will warm up to another six-figure EV remains to be seen, as electric adoption in the luxury segment isn’t where high-end brands want it to be. We wouldn’t hold our breath for a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive Cayenne priced below $100,000. For a cheaper electric SUV from Porsche, the smaller Macan in the base, 4, and 4S trims dips below that threshold.
