The Neighbours stars who have gone on to make it big in Hollywood

Neighbours might be ending, but it will forever be remembered for he Hollywood stars who launched their acting careers on the iconic soap.

Despite being axed after almost 40 years on the air, the legacy of the long-running soap lives on.

Previous residents of Ramsay Street include Oscar-winning Russell Crowe, Oscar-nominated actress Margot Robbie, Guy Pearce, and all three Hemsworth brothers - Luke, Chris and Liam.

The soap began in 1986, and has served as breeding ground for Hollywood talent, as Margot is one of the hottest actresses in the world, along with Liam Hemsworth.

We take a look at some of the biggest names who have been catapulted to superstardom, thanks to Neighbours…

Russell Crowe (Kenny Larkin)

Ex-convict Kenny Larkin was a minor character in Neighbours back in 1987. A friend of Henry Ramsey, Crowe appeared in four episodes before hitting the big time in America.

Born in New Zealand, but he spent most of his childhood in Australia, and went on to appear in 46 films and three television series since his career began in 1985.

But he came to international attention in 2000 when he won an Oscar for his role as Roman General Maximus Decimus Meridius in the epic Gladiator.

Other major film roles include in the biopic A Beautiful Mind, the epic war film Master and Commander, American Gangster, State of Play and Robin Hood.

He also had a major role in musical drama Les Miserables and had the lead role in biblical fantasy drama Noah.

There is a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for him and over his career he has an Oscar, two Golden Globe awards and a Bafta..

Guy Pearce (Mike Young)

Troubled and lonely Mike Young appeared in the soap between 1986 and 1989.

His storylines included being physically abused by his father, moving in with Des and Daphne Clarke, making friends with Scott and Charlene and then his relationship with Jane Harris.

He departed Erinsborough to be with his mother on December 6, 1989, and actor Guy Pearce went on to his make his name in Hollywood.

Becoming a major international star, Guy received international attention for his breakout role in 1994 film The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert, before going on to take starring roles in La Confidential, Memento and The Hurt Locker.

More recently, he has starred in Iron Man 3 and Mary Queen of Scots.

Margot Robbie (Donna Freedman)

Donna was initially introduced as guest character in June 2008, but was quickly promoted to a regular character.

Originally portrayed as an obsessive fan of musician Ty Harper (played by Dean Geyer), she matured into a character who married Ringo Brown (played by Sam Clark).

She also shared a same-sex kiss with Sunny Lee and had an affair with Andrew Robinson, before quitting at the end of her contract in January 2011..

Since leaving the show, Margot has enjoyed a stellar film career and she has become known for her roles in blockbusters and independent films.

She has received several accolades, in addition to nominations for two Academy Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, five Screen Actors Guild Awards and five British Academy Film Awards.

Her breakthrough role came in 2013 when she was cast in The Wolf of Wall Street with Leonardo Di Caprio, and has also had starring roles in The Legend of Tarzan, Suicide Squad, and her critically acclaimed role in I, Tonya.

Alan Dale (Jim Robinson)

One of Neighbours' 12 original characters in 1985, he was the patriarch of the Robinson family before being killed off in 1993.

It was reported at the time that his character was killed off after a falling out with the producers over pay.

After leaving the show, he found he had become typecast in Australia, so moved to America to try and revitalise his career.

And it worked with prominent roles in The OC, Ugly Betty, as well as recurring roles in Lost, 24, ER and The West Wing.

From 2017 to 2021, he also starred in the revamped Dynasty as Joseph Anders.

Liam Hemsworth (Josh Taylor)

He played Bridget Parker's paraplegic friend Josh Taylor, who was left paralysed following a surfing accident, from 2007 to 2008.

After less than 12 months on the soap, Liam headed off to Hollywood with his big brother Chris Hemsworth, who had just quit another Aussie soap, Home & Away.

He auditioned for the role of Thor in the eponymous marvel superhero movie, but lost out to Chris, but Liam eventually hit the big time when he was cast opposite Miley in The Last Song in 2010.

Liam has since starred as Gale in The Hunger Games trilogy, as well as Independence Day: Resurgence, and Isn’t It Romantic.

Jesse Spencer (Billy Kennedy)

Billy arrived with his family in September 1994 and was on the show for six years. His parents remain on the show and he made a small cameo for the show's 20th anniversary episode broadcast in July 2005.

Speaking of his decision to leave, Spencer said "I'd been in Neighbours for five years and I'd had enough. The storylines were boring and I wasn't enjoying it any more. When I said I was leaving, I hoped they would make Bill's departure interesting - but he just moves away from Erinsborough, there's no drama to it. It's disappointing and typical of the last two years of storylines."

it was a good move because he moved to America where he bagged a number of high-profile roads on some of the biggest shows.

He played Dr Robert Chase in the American medical drama House between 2004 and 2012, and Captain Matthew Casey in Chicago Fire from 2012 to 2021.

And it is now just Hollywood, these stars made it big in the pop world

Kylie Minogue (Charlene Mitchell)

Charlene was introduced to the show along with several new characters, as part of a revamp by Network Ten to increase ratings.

Kylie auditioned for the role in 1985, shortly after finishing her high school exams, and was initially contracted for a week.

She made her first screen appearance during the episode broadcast on 17 April 1986. She became one of the show's best known character with her wedding to Scott Robinson watched by 20 million viewer worldwide, but Kylie decided to concentrate on her music career and her final scene was aired on 26 July, 1988.

After it was announced the show was being axed, Kylie expressed her sadness and thanked the show for everything it gave her.

She said: ""I'll be forever grateful for the experience & the friends I made on @neighbours. We had no idea how big the show would become and how passionately viewers would take it to heart. Pure love! I can still hear Madge calling … CHARLENE!!!!"

After the show, Kylie became the highest-selling female Australian artist of all time, having sold over 80 million records worldwide.

In 2008, she was appointed an OBE in the UK's New Years Honours list.

Natalie Imbruglia (Beth Brennan)

Beth Brennan joined the cast at the start of 1992, playing a builder's apprentice in the construction industry

Her main relationship was her long-standing partnership with Brad Willis (played by Scott Michaelson), but she jilted him on their wedding day when she discovered he had been having an affair with Lauren Carpenter.

In real life, Natalie had become unhappy with the fame and left Erinsborough in 1994.

Three years after leaving the programme, she began a singing career with her chart-topping cover of Torn.

Her album. Left of the Middle, sold seven million copies worldwide, and she received two Brit Awards and three Grammy nominations.

Natalie also starred in several films, including Johnny England and Australian indie film Closed for Winter, and last month she was unveiled as Panda, the character who won The Masked Singer.

Jason Donovan (Scott Robinson)

The role of Scott Robinson was originally played by Darius Perkins, but Jason took over in March 1985 and went on to appear in 559 episodes.

He quickly became the serial's 'pin-up' character and his relationship with Charlene had viewers gripped, until he left in 1989 to, like Kylie, pursue a singing career.

His 21-year-old daughter has recently appeared in the show playing Harlow Robinson.

After Neighbours, he sold more than three million records in the UK and sis debut album Ten Good Reasons was the highest-selling album in the UK in 1989, with sales of over 1.5 million.

He has had four UK No. 1 singles, one of which was Especially For You, his 1988 duet with fellow Neighbours co-star Kylie Minogue.

Jason has also appeared in several stage musicals, most prominently in the lead role of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Raincoat in the early 1990s.
