Brat, like ogres and onions, has layers. Charli xcx’s Shrek-green artistic project was years in the making, with the original album, the remix album, and a tour delivered over more than just a namesake summer. The Moment, a mockumentary-style take on a commercialised tour film, is the final nightmare remix of Brat – imagining an alternative timeline in which Charli fails to meet the moment and falls, humiliatingly and spectacularly, at the final hurdle.
It’s a fascinating final layer to the Brat legend, finishing a wildly successful album cycle by acting out how it could have gone wrong instead. In this reality, a more shallow and vain Charli allows her insecurities to be pranged by the media and other famous women (Kylie Jenner is surprisingly good as herself here), creating a power vacuum for Amazon to install odious filmmaker Johannes (Alexander Skarsgård hamming it up as an incredibly punchable villain) and oust her creative director, Celeste (Hailey Gates). Jamie Demetriou brings the very British humour as Tim, Charli’s hapless assistant.
