The Masters LIVE: Rory McIlroy storms to sensational six-shot lead after stunning birdie run at Augusta

Rory McIlroy took a giant step towards claiming a second consecutive Masters title after a stunning second round finale at Augusta National on Friday.

The Northern Irishman, who claimed golf’s grand slam with his memorable victory last year, hit six birdies in the last seven holes to storm ahead of the field on 12-under, six ahead of his nearest competitors in the American pair of 2018 champion Patrick Reed and youngster Sam Burns. It is the biggest lead after 36 holes in Masters history.

Englishman Justin Rose, who lost to McIlroy in last year’s play-off, is tied-third on five-under with compatriot Tommy Fleetwood and Ryder Cup teammate Shane Lowry, with all three enjoying fruitful second rounds before McIlroy sauntered clear of the chasing pack late on.

Another Englishman, in Tyrrell Hatton, remains in the mix on four under, while there was an early shock as Bryson DeChambeau missed the cut after a round to forget on Friday.

REPORT: Rory McIlroy dazzles and holds unprecedented Masters lead – greatness is on the horizon

01:00 , Kieran Jackson

Ed Malyon at Augusta National:

Birdie, birdie, birdie. Some start, Rory.

After everyone at Augusta had spent the morning wondering who could jostle into position for the green jacket, along came the defending champion, the man of last April’s emotional triumph, to remind everybody what it takes to win here.

That four-hole stretch straight out of the gate on a hot Friday lunchtime at Augusta completely changed the tone of the day. No longer did this have the feel of a cluttered leaderboard, a peloton of golfers jostling for position before the great climb of this weekend. Instead this became an outright chase, and McIlroy appears to have an extra gear.

Full report:

Rory McIlroy dazzles for unprecedented Masters lead – greatness is on the horizon

Rory McIlroy, speaking to Sky Sports:

Saturday 11 April 2026 00:20 , Kieran Jackson

How did you do that? “I don’t know! I was really good with the wedges and short game the last two days, that’s been the bulk of my score. I’ve relied on those scoring clubs, this course enables you to get on runs. When you’re feeling it around here, you can get momentum and keep it rolling - this afternoon was one of those afternoons.

How have you been dealing with the pressure? “I’ve always loved this tournament and this golf course, even when I felt it didn’t love me back. It’s such a pleasure to be here, there’s nothing else like this. I so badly wanted to win this to come back every year, did that last year.

“When I miss fairways and greens, it’s fine. I feel like I’m playing with the house’s money, which is a nice feeling to have.”

On his game: “I hit more fairways today than I did yesterday. Just making good decisions, you have to create angles, if I can just keep thinking well and making good decisions with what’s put in front of me, hopefully do that for the weekend and hopefully everything works out.”

The run of McIlroy birdies looks to be coming to an end on the fifth. A colossal drive puts him in a great position in the middle of the fairway but he completely botches his next shot, firing right of the green. He’s lucky not to see the ball roll further down the hill.

He has a pretty straightforward pitch, which he dinks nicely but sees roll just past the hole. Barring any howler, this should be a simple putt for par.

Tommy Fleetwood overshoots from the fourth tee, going long and right past the green to leave him with work to do to make par.

He opts for the putter rather than the wedge from the grass, looking to use the slope of the green to his advantage - it’s not a bad effort, but he’s left a fair distance away from the hole. He’ll need a big putt to save par.

Li has moved back level par after another bogey on seven.

Scheffler has grabbed a birdie on eight to move back into the red, and he’s level with the trio of Rose, Koepka and Spieth at the moment.

Kitayama has started the day with par on the first two holes, while Hatton and Gotterup are still ploughing on on -2.

Joint leader Sam Burns is teeing off for the day, so we’ll keep an eye on how he’s doing early on.

Koepka’s par putt on nine isn’t terrible but it’s wide, and he bogeys to go to -1.

Rose lines up his putt from around six feet and he holes it, but moves to -1.

Spieth is steady enough with his par putt and he stays on -1.

Elsewhere, a bogey from Li means he moves back to -1. He’s really yo-yoing so far today!

Leaderboard: -5 McIlroy (18:44), Burns (17:32); -4 Clark (16); -3 Reed (18:08), Day (17:56), Kitayama (1); -2 Lowry (17:56), Schauffele (18:20), Hatton (10), Gotterup (9)

Hatton pulls up short with a birdie chance on 10 but he’ll be safe for par.

Rose is having a brief argument with his caddy over where to pitch his second shot on the ninth, from around 145 yards. It’s a decent effort, rolling back to give himself a birdie chance.

Koepka’s shot is from the left, but it flies long just past the green.

Spieth lines it up from 121 yards – his shot is good initially but it rolls down the hill! He’ll do well to save par.

Leaderboard: -5 McIlroy (18:44), Burns (17:32); -4 Clark (16); -3 Reed (18:08), Day (17:56), Kitayama (1); -2 Lowry (17:56), Schauffele (18:20), Li (5), Rose (8), Hatton (10), Koepka (8), Gotterup (9)

Li has also climbed back up to -2.

Kitayama has teed off for the day as he looks to build on a three-under on day one.

On eight, Rose’s approach shot fizzes past the pin and he should be taking another birdie - but he goes wide! He’s furious as he settles for par.

Koepka’s eagle chance goes close but at least it sets him up with an easy birdie too, and he takes it.

Spieth is about six feet away on his birdie attempt but it’s a bizarre effort with nowhere near enough power. He settles for par.

Leaderboard: -5 McIlroy (18:44), Burns (17:32); -3 Reed (18:08), Day (17:56), Kitayama (17:03), Clark (15); -2 Lowry (17:56), Schauffele (18:20), Li (5), Rose (8), Hatton (9), Koepka (8)

A par for Scheffler on the next hole and he stays level par.

Clark has another birdie and moves back to the group on -2, while Li Haotong has done the reverse and bogeyed to move to -1.

Max Homa has also started for the day and he birdied the first hole to go to -1 alongside Rai and Tyrell Hatton, who’s had a great first eight holes that he’s three-under for!

Spieth and Koepka are also in that -1 group as they tee off on eight.

Leaderboard: -5 McIlroy (18:44), Burns (17:32); -3 Reed (18:08), Day (17:56), Kitayama (17:03); -2 Lowry (17:56), Schauffele (18:20), Clark (14), Li (3), Rose (7)

No LIV Golf player breaks par in round one of the Masters as Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau struggle

Friday 10 April 2026 16:57 , Chris Wilson

No LIV Golf player managed to break par in round one of the Masters as Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau struggled on a bruising Thursday at Augusta National.

Sergio Garcia, who finished level par after a round of 72, was the breakaway Saudi-backed series’ best finisher after an opening 18 contested in tough conditions on firm and fast surfaces.

Rahm, the 2023 champion, and the big-hitting DeChambeau had been fancied by many to contend after encouraging form on LIV this year but could well find themselves battling to even make the cut.

Yet another birdie chance for Rose. Sometimes it only takes one.

The putt is lined up from quite a distance – it’s holed! Back up to -2! He’s back to where he started.

A mistake from Koepka follows, as he misjudges the angle for the birdie putt.

Elsewhere, a bogey from Rai on nine sets him back to -1.

Leaderboard: -5 McIlroy (18:44), Burns (17:32); -3 Reed (18:08), Day (17:56), Kitayama (17:03); -2 Lowry (17:56), Schauffele (18:20), Clark (12), Koepka (6), Clark (13), Li (3), Rose (7)

Spieth has landed among the trees on seven – he digs it out but finds the front bunker.

Koepka’s approach also finds the bunker, but he could be okay.

Further back, Scheffler pulls up short on his birdie putt and it’s an awkward par putt – and he skims wide! He moves to level with back-to-back bogeys.

Rose has come close on a few holes but he’s still not landed a birdie so far today as he wraps up the sixth with a par.

Koepka gets good pace on yet another birdie attempt but it’s not got the legs and he stays on -2.

Leaderboard: -5 McIlroy (18:44), Burns (17:32); -3 Reed (18:08), Day (17:56), Kitayama (17:03), -2 Lowry (17:56), Schauffele (18:20), Clark (12); Koepka (6); Clark (13), Rai (8)

Another par for Scheffler on three, and he looks understandably disappointed.

Koepka has joined his compatriot on -2 after a third birdie of the day, and Rose does well to save a poor tee shot and make par on the fifth.

So, how are some of the other contenders doing?

Aaron Rai remains one-under through seven, with Gotterup on the same score through four. Ben Griffin is the final player tied in 10th, and he’s played through three.

Tyrell Hatton has moved two-under for the day through five to give himself a much better chance of making the cut, though both Sepp Straka and Ludvig Aberg are trailing behind on +1 after their first few holes of the day.

Jon Rahm is also two-under for the day through five but he probably has too much to do on +4, and in similar position - through in drastically different circumstances – is JJ Spaun, who is plus-two for the day to move to +4.

On the second, Scheffler knives it on his third shot and it flies past the pin, though there’s a slim chance at a birdie there.

However, he didn’t like the putt from the moment he hit it, and he’ll have settle for par.

Elsewhere, Clark has dropped a shot and moved to -2.

Spieth isn’t happy with his tee shot on four – and rightly so as it lands in the greenside bunker. Not an awful lot needed to get up and down though.

Rose follows it by setting the example, clearing the bunker and rolling within a few feet of the pin!

Definitely a birdie chance...it’s narrowly wide!

Koepka lines up a third birdie in a row but he’s not put enough on the putt!

Koepka does better though, with back-to-back birdies taking him to -1! A great start for the American.

Spieth hopes to follow him but it wobbles to the right. He stays on -1.

Dame Laura Davies: 'If you're a champion, you know you're always coming back'

Friday 10 April 2026 15:48 , Chris Wilson

Dame Laura Davies is on Sky Sports speaking about the pressure of winning The Masters:

“The thing about Augusta is, if you're a champion, you know you're always coming back - look at Fred Couples this year, at 66,” she explains.

"There's the pressure of wanting that so much, for the likes of Justin Rose, Tommy Fleetwood, the pressure of knowing what winning this tournament gives you - for the rest of your life and your family.

"It makes it such a difficult one to win, like we documented with Rory trying so many times to do it.

"That's what makes it so special here, because there's so much on the line for these guys. They've got the money, but they want that Green Jacket and an invite for the rest of their lives,” she added.

Not a lot of movement over the last couple of holes then as Wydnham Clark stays on -3 after the front nine.

Chris Gotterup has moved tied-10th after a birdie (he’s through three) and a bogey from Rai has moved him back to -1.

From Rose’s group, the Englishman and Spieth both took par on the second, while a birdie for Koepka brings him back level.

Elsewhere, Scheffler has settled for par on the first.

Friday 10 April 2026 14:31 , Chris Wilson

World number one Scottie Scheffler begins the day on -2 as he looks to become a three-time Masters winner this weekend.

The American previously won in 2022 and 2024, and could join Phil Mickelson and Gary Player as three-time winners of the prestigious major.

“There were a few putts that lipped out that I thought I had made. But other than that, a lot of really good stuff,” Scheffler said of his play on day one.

“Going out later is typically going to be harder than going out earlier. That’s just part of it, but I get to go out earlier tomorrow,” he said of his day two picture.
