The tortoise does not wait. It withdraws.
There is a distinction the Kurma Purana makes that almost every popular retelling drops. When Vishnu takes the form of Kurma, the tortoise avatar, to support Mount Mandara during the churning of the cosmic ocean, the text is not describing a god who endures patiently while others do the work. It is describing a consciousness that has already decided where its weight belongs, and then gone completely still. The mountain rests on his back. The ocean churns. He does not flinch, and he does not help. That combination, full commitment and total non-interference, is the actual teaching, and it is far more demanding than patience.
