The Grand Designs award-winning straw house with one of the UK's top Airbnb hosts

Airbnb have recently launched their first national Host Awards 2022 and one of the inaugural winners is from Wales - highlighting a pretty special place to stay if you are passionate about clocking off from modern life and supporting sustainable tourism. The Quiet Earth Eco House in Ceredigion is owned, and was built back in the mid-2000s by Rachel Shiamh who was awarded the Most Sustainable Host award.

Rachel has taken initiatives like building with natural materials, harvesting rainwater and utilising biofuel at her listing, all contributing to a sustainable space and guest experience. Earlier this year, Airbnb launched its Sustainable Hosting Plan, including a £1 million fund to support hosts with energy efficiency improvements, giving those like Rachel backing to be more sustainable going forward.

The Quiet Earth holiday home was also the Grand Designs Eco home award winner 2008 and is the UK's first loadbearing straw bale house. The two-storey home is a cosy and eco-friendly retreat that also benefits from lush views over the Teifi Estuary.

It's also off-grid so that means no hairdryers, meaning you'll have to be up for a low-maintenance weekend to stay here - it's certainly for those who love to switch off. It's powered by wind and sun and the whole house is heated by a wood stove in the open-plan kitchen. The bedroom is also an open plan room that offers itself as a luxury bedroom and studio for a couple or a space for family or occasionally a retreat space for a group of up to eight with low futon style beds.

Outside is a real treat for nature lovers with a wood-fired hot tub to relax in while drinking in all the wild, natural surroundings where you'll find paths through the woodland and there's also a forest garden in development.
