A much-loved LGBTQ+ venue in east London is about to close its doors for the final time.
Based in the heart of Haggerston, The Glory has been a staple for the community for nine years. The place to go for those looking for high-energy performances, off the wall parties, and quirky club nights - or even, those who fancy just a quiet pint in a friendly pub.
It’s a place which has helped many entertainers when carving out their careers, including RuPaul’s Drag Race UK royalty, Bimini Bon Boulash and Ginger Johnson.
However, by the end of January, The Glory will be no more. Don’t worry too much though because the owners have something new up their sleeves. The Divine promises to be a fresher, bigger space with more possibility - whilst maintaining the characterful and off beat charm people have come to know and love.
To mark the end of an era and the beginning of a new, The Standard podcast heads to The Glory, to speak to founders, and performers, John Sizzle and Jonny Woo. They take us on a tour of the old stomping ground whilst explaining how they created such an iconic and treasured venue. They discuss the struggles faced by the hospitality industry today, why spaces like this are so important for the community, and reveal details about their next project.
