The Crown ignores Prince William's pleas not to exploit Diana's Panorama interview

The Crown has ignored Prince William's pleas not to exploit his mother Diana's bombshell BBC Panorama interview.

The hit Netflix show will return with series five next week and will charter the Prince and Princess of Wales' marriage collapse and the pressure this puts on the monarchy.

It will have two episodes leading up to Princess Diana's now infamous chat with Martin Bashir in 1995, with bosses deciding to cut the original four minutes they had filmed of the interview down to just 23 seconds, according to reports.

Diana's tell-all interview was watched by an estimated 200 million people and became one of the most-talked about moments of the 20th century.

But The Crown has come under fire amid reports the language and conversation has been exaggerated for TV screens.

Diana's friend Ingrid Seward, who is editor-in-chief of Majesty Magazine, told The Sun : "William will be furious. He said his piece when he said it should never be aired again.

"This is his mother and her memory they are doing this to. It must be very frustrating as he can’t say any more because it will just give Netflix more publicity.

"They should have listened to him. The interview has no credibility after the investigation. Everyone knows it has no legitimacy now."

A spokesperson for Netflix told The Mirror: "Season 5 of The Crown will dramatise events surrounding the Panorama interview, given the pivotal part it played during the time period the series covers.

"It will reflect what we now know about how the interview was obtained and how Diana was treated. The interview is not recreated in full."

A source told The Telegraph earlier this month that the future king feels The Crown are using the Bashir interview and the "dramatisation of it for financial gain".

The teaser clip shows Diana, portrayed by Elizabeth Debicki, and Charles, played by Dominic West, consulting the Queen and later her reminding her son of his duty "as future king".

As scenes show the increased media attention surrounding the relationship, a voiceover says: "The house of Windsor should be binding the nation together, setting an example of idealised family life.

"It’s a situation which can’t help but affect the stability of the country."

The spotlight focuses on Diana and the character can be heard saying: “People will never understand how it’s been for me. I never stood a chance.”

In 2021, a BBC investigation, launched by Diana's brother Earl Charles Spencer, found that Martin commissioned fake bank statements in order to mislead Diana into telling her story.

Prince William and Prince Harry issued a joint statement denouncing the Panorama interview in May 2021, saying, "It is my view that the deceitful way the interview was obtained substantially influenced what my mother said.

"The interview was a major contribution to making my parents' relationship worse and has since hurt countless others."

The upcoming fifth season of The Crown is coming to Netflix at a rather unusual time.

It will be the first series of the fan-favourite Royal drama to be released after the deaths of both Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022 and Prince Philip in April 2021, and the ascension of King Charles III to the throne, marking a new era for the monarchy.

Friends of the royals and acclaimed actress Dame Judi Dench have spoken out ahead of its release calling for a disclaimer to be added to each episode of The Crown, saying the hit Netflix drama has begun to verge on "crude sensationalism".

She added that "wounding suggestions apparently contained in the new series" will prove "damaging" to the monarchy and cannot go unchallenged.

A spokeswoman for The Crown said: "The Crown has always been presented as a drama based on historical events.

"Series five is a fictional dramatisation, imagining what could have happened behind closed doors during a significant decade for the royal family – one that has already been scrutinised and well-documented by journalists, biographers and historians."
