The compensation snag holding up Russell Martin's Southampton move and the substantial cash windfall at stake for Swansea City

Russell Martin's move to Southampton boss is still expected to go ahead despite Swansea City's insistence on holding out for a larger compensation package.

As first reported by journalist Alan Nixon, Martin has two different compensation values in his contract, one for an approach from Premier League clubs, believed to be around £1.75m and another for Championship sides, understood to be around £1.25m.

Southampton, following their relegation from the Premier League, have made the case that they should pay the fee for Championship clubs. However, given they were still a top-flight club when they made their move for the Swansea boss, the Swans hierarchy believe they are entitled to the higher fee.

It means Martin's move to St Mary's has hit something of an impasse, although sources are adamant the deal will still go ahead.

Nevertheless, fans are understandably growing frustrated by the glacial pace of his exit, which has slowed the club's summer plans, and the potential search for a new boss.

The club are understood to have spoken to Spaniard Oscar Garcia, but may face competition from rivals Cardiff City should they wish to get a move over the line. Ex-USA boss Gregg Berhalter is another man who has been contacted, although club insiders have since indicated he's no longer in the running.

Former Leicester City assistant Chris Davies is the favourite with the bookies, who also favour Plymouth's Steven Schumacher.

Meanwhile, John Eustace has his admirers in the Swansea boardroom having twice come close to the job before. At the time of writing, though, there hasn't yet been any approach.

Nathan Jones, despite emerging as an early favourite, isn't believed to be in the frame at this stage.
