The Class Signals Hidden in an Indian Woman's Handbag, Footwear and Ironed Kurta

The bag that does the talking before you do

A structured leather handbag in cognac or black, carried on the forearm rather than slung from the shoulder, announces a very specific kind of woman before she has said a word. The shoulder sling is casual, democratic, young. The forearm carry is deliberate. It says: I have somewhere to be, and I have been places before. The signals inside the bag matter almost as much as the bag itself. A woman who pulls out a slim card holder rather than a fat wallet stuffed with grocery loyalty cards is performing a particular edit on her life, the edit of someone who has already sorted the excess out. The woman with the tote from a literary festival, canvas and slightly crumpled, is making a different argument: that she is above the performance of the leather bag, which is itself a performance. In Delhi's Lajpat Nagar market and in the Linking Road lanes of Mumbai, the same handbag silhouette gets replicated at a third of the price. Women who carry these know exactly what they are doing. So do the women who can tell the difference. The class signal in an Indian woman's bag is not always about the object, it is about the confidence with which the object is carried, and whether that confidence has a wobble in it.
