The Chevrolet Sonic Is Back—But Not For The US

The Breakdown

  • General Motors Brazil has revived the Sonic name for a new sub-compact crossover.
  • There's no official word on the powertrain yet, but the Sonic is likely to utilize a mild-hybrid setup with a three-cylinder engine.
  • There's little to no chance this model will arrive in the US market.

The Chevrolet Sonic returns! Just don't expect to see one on your local dealer lot, as the sub-compact superstar has been revived as a crossover exclusively for the South American market.

General Motors in Brazil just announced the return of the Sonic name. The automaker calls this reborn Sonic an SUV coupe, which is code for crossover with a sloping roofline. This is a familiar-looking machine, already, even if it's brand new. There's clear inspiration from Equinox and Trax throughout the new Sonic.

Regardless, the little runabout looks good. It's just a shame we can't buy it.

A Critical Model In An Important Market

Chevrolet launches the new Sonic into Brazil's most popular market segment. There, it sits between the Onix Activ and Tracker in the large GM portfolio of available SUVs and crossovers.

The automaker is eager to bring new buyers to the brand, and it could prove successful due to the potential powertrain we've heard will sit under the Sonic's skin.

General Motors has a flex-fuel hybrid setup that's begun rolling out in the South American market. This mild-hybrid setup pairs a 48-volt system with a small 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine. While already set for use in the Tracker and Montana, rumor has it that the Sonic could also receive a version of this same setup.

Not Bound For The US

The 2026 Chevy Sonic remains very much a model built for the South American market. There are currently no plans in place to bring it to the US. That's a shame, considering just how expensive new cars and fuel prices have become.

The Sonic could potentially undercut the Trax, while also offering a gas alternative to the Bolt.

Motor1's Take: The old Chevy Sonic was a surprisingly fun yet affordable hatchback and sedan. It offered entry-level value, yet wasn't simply a soul-sucking point-A-to-point-B appliance. Sonic devotees might be mad that this new one is a crossover, but there's definitely a market here in the US for a small, affordable, efficient subcompact crossover.
