With just over a week to go until Christmas Day many shoppers will be preparing to stock up on festive foods - be it traditional pigs’ in blankets as a side for dinner or biscuits and chocolates to snack on.
As the price of everything continues to rise shoppers are on the lookout for getting products for as little as possible. Research from the team at MoneySavingExperts shows Aldi is the cheapest place to shop for 'normal' Christmas Dinner essentials, but it's not the same if shopping for gluten-free or other free from products.
Retailers Asda (£23.35) and Tesco (£23.62) come close behind in the top 3 for having the cheapest Christmas prices. But anyone with allergies, or hosting a friend or family with allergies will know how much more expensive cooking free from food is.
I was diagnosed with Coeliac disease in University and eating gluten free certainly adds a lot more money to the weekly food shop, especially around Christmas time. Aldi may be the cheapest place to go for a general Christmas food shop, but I’ve left it off the list as there isn’t the same amount of choice compared to other UK supermarkets.
We’ve rounded up the prices of Christmas gluten free foods from six UK; Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys, Morrisons, M&S and Waitrose. These retailers stock the same free-from versions of Christmas staples including the traditional sweet treats and dinner staples like gravy granules and pigs in blankets.
As a disclaimer we purposefully didn’t include Lidl and Aldi as they don’t stock all the gluten free items above. However both brands do have everyday gluten free products including staples like flour and cereal.
The cheapest supermarket
Rounding up all eight gluten free products Asda is the clear winner coming in at £14.25 for a pack of mince pies, fruit cake slices, Christmas pudding, gravy granules, stuffing mix, flour, savoury biscuits and pigs in blankets.
This is closely followed by Tesco (£17.05) and Sainsbury’s (£17.30) where shoppers can all eight items for Morrisons (£20.74) and Waitrose (£21.55) sit in the middle and M&S is the most expensive, costing a total of £24.55. Between the most expensive supermarket, M&S, and the cheapest, Asda, there is a checkout difference of £7.30.
I chose products that the majority of UK supermarkets stock, to make it as fair as possible. Including a round up of items for the main Christmas dinner like pigs in blankets, gluten free gravy granules, stuffing mix and flour (for the roast potatoes etc) and desserts; Christmas pudding, iced Christmas cake and of course mince pies.
Places like Asda and Tesco generally offer a wider range of gluten free products like stuffing ball crisps and gluten free panetone but the prices are not comparable as it’s not stocked by all.
