Liverpool’s drag scene is getting more diverse by the minute and one queen leading the way is Kiki Pain.
Kiki, real name Ciara McDermott, is an AFAB queen meaning she was born as a female and chooses to do drag as opposed to the traditional view where it is reserved for men only. As of yet, the only representation of AFAB drag queens in mainstream media is Victoria Scone, a Welsh performer known for being the first cisgender female contestant on any series of the RuPaul’s Drag Race franchise. After causing controversy for doing so, AFAB queens up and down the country, including Kiki, are preparing to show they can shine just as bright as their counterparts.
The 23-year-old from Widnes told the ECHO : “I completely think people underestimate me because of this. The drag on the Liverpool scene is very different and varied which sometimes makes my drag hard to understand for some people. But, when I am in drag I feel as though nothing can stop me. I feel like I am at my best and my confidence levels go through the roof. Out of drag I still have the same confident, bubbly personality however when I’m in drag there’s something about gluing a brow down that gives you power.”
