The Audi A2 Is Officially Coming Back: First Teaser

THE BREAKDOWN

  • The Audi A2 E-Tron debuts this fall.
  • It'll serve as the brand's entry-level EV.
  • The new A2 is likely to be twinned with the Volkswagen ID.3 Neo

The rumors were true. Audi is indeed dusting off the “A2” name for a new model. This time around, it won’t feature gasoline or diesel engines, as the moniker will be repurposed for a purely electric car. Known by its full name as the Audi A2 E-Tron, the upcoming EV will indirectly replace the A1 supermini and the Q2 subcompact crossover.

Coinciding with the name confirmation, a first teaser image was shown today during the company's annual conference. While it doesn’t reveal much, the reborn A2 is expected to serve as a more luxurious version of the Volkswagen ID.3. Not the current electric hatchback from Wolfsburg, but the upcoming facelift, which will adopt the ID.3 Neo name.

2027 Audi A2 E-Tron teasers

While VW’s variant is a traditional hatchback, its Audi counterpart will also incorporate crossover traits and even nods to the original minivan-esque A2 from the early 2000s. We’ll finally see the entry-level EV sometime this fall, before it goes on sale in Europe either by the end of the year or in early 2027. Production will take place at home in Ingolstadt.

The Q2 E-Tron isn’t the only premiere Audi has lined up for this year. During today’s conference, the Four Rings also confirmed plans to unveil the next-generation Q7 and the first-ever Q9. There’s also a “reimagined” Q4 E-Tron on the way, which is presumably a fancy term for a mid-cycle facelift. The mainstream VW ID.4 is also getting a nip and tuck this year, so it makes sense for Audi to update its tuxedo-wearing counterpart.

What’s concerning is that Audi isn’t saying anything about the A8. As we exclusively reported, order books have closed in Germany. There’s still no sign of a direct replacement, which suggests a new flagship isn’t coming anytime soon.

Motor1's Take: Audi has kept busy over the past couple of years, steadily updating its lineup. The upcoming debuts will round out the refreshed portfolio before the Concept C electric sports car arrives in 2027, ushering in a new era. Audi has promised a fresh design language and higher-quality interiors.

In the meantime, the 2026 debuts will follow the same formula as recent Audi models, so the real revolution won’t arrive until next year.
