Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney just delivered a pretty direct challenge to the United States, pointing out Canada’s significant lead in icebreaker capabilities. He made it clear that Canada is ramping up its presence in the Arctic, stating, “We already have the second largest icebreaker fleet in the world after Russia. Once our icebreaker program is completed, we will have the largest. We will have 42 icebreakers. The Americans have one.”
According to France 24, Carney stopped at the Northwest territories before heading to Norway, where he’ll observe Arctic defense drills involving troops from 14 NATO states. Carney emphasized the strategic importance of Canada’s extreme north. “Canada is, and forever will be, an Arctic nation.”
