Michael Beale needs to add a "touch of quality" in three key positions before Rangers can think about bridging the gap to Celtic.
That's the view of former Ibrox midfielder and chief scout Neil Murray who believes Beale can use a trimmed down squad to his advantage as his rebuild continues. Beale only added two players to his squad in January in Todd Cantwell and Nicolas Raskin but he's expected to have a big summer with a number of players out of contract.
Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos are the big two while Malik Tillman, one of their players of the season so far, is only on loan from Bayern Munich - albeit with a purchase option that is yet to be resolved. That's a key striker, winger and attacking midfielder and Murray, speaking to PLZ Soccer, reckons all three of those positions will need addressed in the summer.
"Michael Beale's been on record saying he needs to trim the squad. They do have a lot of players, you've got two, maybe three for each position, so naturally they'll lose players through contract expiry.
"Then it will be a question of adding key players, and I think that's the most important component, is to add that real touch of quality. Whether that's a striker if Morelos goes, whether it's a wide player if Kent goes, or if they don't sign Tillman, it's a '10'.
"Celtic have got that little bit of quality in the final third that can make the difference. I don't think Rangers have quite got that."
