TfL travel guide for New Year's Eve as Elizabeth line set to strike

Most transport will be operating as normal but Londoners can expect a busy commute - (Alamy / PA)

Travel will play a significant role during New Year’s Eve, whether you have a ticket to the spectacular fireworks show or you're just hanging out with friends or family.

It's not too late to purchase a ticket for the London fireworks display, as they will go on sale for a final round on Monday, December 1.

TfL will not be offering a free service on New Year’s Day; this was stopped in 2020 due to financial loss over the pandemic.

Whatever your plan is, here’s the latest travel update from Transport for London (TfL).

Tube

On New Year's Eve, TfL is anticipated to operate the Night Tube so that partygoers throughout the city can return home safely.

In terms of New Year’s Day, the Tube will run on a Sunday service after midday.

However, you can expect some disruptions.

There will be no service between between Baker Street and Aldgate from 2am and 11am on the Metropolitan line. Passengers can use Circle and Hammersmith & City line services.

There will be no service on the Piccadilly line between midnight and 11am, between Rayners Lane and Uxbridge. Passengers are advised to use Metropolitan line services instead.

Waterloo & City and the District line (to Kensington Olympia) will not be running on both days.

Bus

Buses will operate as normal on New Year’s Eve. However, on New Year’s Day, you can expect a Sunday service after midday.

Elizabeth line

On New Year's Eve, members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) who work on the Elizabeth line are scheduled to go on a 24-hour walkout from 9pm.

Trains will continue to run, but there will probably be delays throughout the entire network because the striking employees are control room employees.

London Overground

A special New Year's Eve service will operate between West Croydon/Crystal Palace and Highbury & Islington throughout the night.

On New Year’s Day, additional trains will run from Euston to Queen’s Park at 1.20am, for Bakerloo line connections, from Queen’s Park to Euston at 1.35am, and from Euston to Watford Junction at 1.55am.

There will be no service between Liverpool Street and London Fields on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Use London Underground Victoria line between Central London and Seven Sisters/Walthamstow Central and London buses connections.

Again, on both days, a reduced service will operate between London Fields and Cheshunt / Chingford / Enfield Town. Chingford trains operate every 30 minutes, and trains to Cheshunt / Enfield Town each operate hourly, including an overnight service on New Year’s Eve.
