Update: Matthew Johnson was executed via lethal injection Tuesday night in Huntsville. In his final statement from the gurney, he apologized to Nancy Harris’ family members, who were there to witness the execution.
“I please ask for your forgiveness. I never meant to hurt her,” he reportedly said. “I pray that she’s the first person I see when I open my eyes and I spend eternity with. … I made wrong choices, I’ve made wrong decisions, and now I pay the consequences.”
Matthew Johnson’s guilt was never in question. On the stand during his 2013 trial, he admitted to the crime that landed him on death row. The attack—an early morning robbery and murder in a populous Dallas suburb—was also caught on camera.
