Tesco recalls tzatziki dip due to salmonella contamination

Tesco says salmonella was found in the product during routine testing - (PA Wire)

Tesco shoppers have been alerted that a dip sold by the supermarket giant has been contaminated with salmonella.

On November 19, the chain — the largest retailer in the UK — issued a recall statement to those who purchased the 200g Tesco Tzatziki Dip with a use-by date of November 24.

Tesco said salmonella was found in the product during routine testing.

“If you have bought the above product do not eat it,” the statement said. “instead, return it to any Tesco store for a full refund. No receipt is required.” The supermarket added that none of its other products were affected.

Salmonella is a type of bacteria that causes an infection when consumed by humans. Common symptoms include diarrhoea, fever and abdominal cramps.

Food can become contaminated with salmonella in several ways — from improper food preparation to being washed with contaminated water.

Customers with queries are advised to contact Tesco Customer Services on 0800 505 555.

This isn’t the first time a supermarket has had to recall an item due to salmonella fears. Sky News reported that a batch of the same product was recalled in 2021. However, that was because it had been mispackaged with sour cream and chive dip, potentially threatening customers with an egg allergy.

Aldi, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and M&S have all had to recall chicken purchased in their shops in the past.

In 2022, chocolate firm Ferrero recalled batches of Kinder Surprise eggs in the UK due to a “potential link to a salmonella outbreak” after cases of young children with the infection were reported.
