Tesco makes huge change to 800 stores - and it means speedier service for customers

Tesco will be expanding its same-day delivery service Whoosh to 800 stores by the end of this month.

The delivery service, which was first launched in 2021 and expanded to 600 stores last year, aims to get groceries to you between 30 minutes to an hour after ordering them.

The big four supermarket has put the cost of the Whoosh delivery at £2.99 each, with an extra charge of £2 added if your order is under £15.

The delivery cost used to be £5 but was cut during the World Cup last year and has remained since.

There isn't a minimum spend on a Whoosh order either so in theory you could do your weekly shop with the service and get it in half an hour.

However, there are only certain items you can get through in a Whoosh delivery with Tesco's website showing around 80 that can be bought.

Although, the 80 items do range from everyday essentials, fruit and vegetables, breakfast basics, alcohol, evening meals, and Tesco's finest.

Currently, Easter and pancake day items are available through Whoosh.

Tesco charges anywhere between £3.50 and £7 for a one-off delivery slot depending on the time of your delivery, with an added £4 if your shop is under £40.

However, the supermarket chain last year introduced "Delivery Saver" options for customers which allows them to pay monthly, or upfront, for their food shop delivery costs.

Tesco offers a 12-month plan and a six-month plan, with a choice of off-peak and anytime delivery and anytime click and collect.

It costs £4.99 per month for six months or £29.94 upfront for an Off-Peak Delivery Pass, where delivery is free after 3pm and same-day Click & Collect is available.

Alternatively, you’ll pay £3.99 per month or £47.88 upfront if you sign up for 12 months.

There’s also the Anytime Delivery Plan which costs £7.99, a month for six months, or £47.94 upfront, or £6.99 per month or £83.88 upfront if you opt for 12 months.

If you go for one of these options, then the cost will include as many orders as you like over the course of your plan.

You would definitely save money buying an Anytime Delivery plan pass compared to Whoosh if you plan on buying more than three deliveries a month from Tesco.

But if you are a every two weeks or longer kind of food shopper, or a once in a blue moon Tesco shopper, then the Whoosh service might save you more cash in the long run compared to the monthly plans.

Currently, there are over 2,000 Tesco supermarkets in the UK and Whoosh is delivering from around 800 of them, so before you rely on the last-minute delivery service you should first check if your local store offers the service.
