Tesco customers are today (April 18) facing a significant change affecting the Tesco Clubcard rewards programme.
The change won't affect anyone using a Tesco Clubcard Pay+ debit card. This is a prepaid card that offers users one point for every £8 spent outside of Tesco, in addition to the ordinary Clubcard points they would normally receive.
The change will also not affect anyone who has a Clubcard Plus subscription. This costs £7.99 a month and offers users 10 per cent off their purchases twice a month.
So what exactly is the change that’s been made to Tesco’s Clubcard? Here’s everything you need to know.
What change has been made to Tesco’s Clubcard?
The current Clubcard app, which users use to earn points and receive money off their purchases, has been replaced by the newly updated Tesco Clubcard and Grocery app. Consumers must download this to keep accruing points.
The new software has replaced both the existing Clubcard app and the separate Tesco Pay+ app for improved convenience. The UK’s biggest supermarket chain ended Tesco Pay+ on February 27.
Tesco says the new app will allow customers to pay for goods; examine their point balance; use Clubcard vouchers; order deliveries; and check stock in stores.
A Tesco representative said: “Bringing the functionality of Tesco Pay+ into the Tesco Grocery & Clubcard app is a demonstration of our focus on providing products which closely align to the needs of Tesco shoppers.”
Tesco shoppers can continue to use their physical Clubcards in stores as normal, however.
How to download the new Tesco Clubcard app
The app is already live. Anyone wanting to continue to receive Clubcard benefits will have to download it from today (April 18).
To do this, simply type "Tesco Grocery and Clubcard" into the app store on your phone. You can easily log back into your account after downloading it free of charge on Android and iPhone devices.
What will happen to existing Tesco Clubcard vouchers and rewards?
By transferring to the new app, you will not lose any points, rewards or vouchers.
Are there any other planned Tesco Clubcard changes?
Yes. Tesco said in March it will cut the value of its Clubcard rewards scheme in a move that has provoked anger from customers.
Tesco said its Clubcard points will be worth twice their value when customers cash them in, rather than three times as they are now, from June 14.
The scheme enables shoppers to collect points for money spent at Tesco. They can then exchange them for vouchers, which can be used in store or for excursions such as restaurant meals and day trips. More than 100 retailers, attractions and other hospitality industry services are part of the loyalty scheme, including Legoland, Hotels.com, Cineworld and Pizza Express. They are known as “reward partners”.
