Tense moment during BBC Happy Valley finale that had viewers screaming at their TVs

A lot was riding on BBC drama Happy Valley's final episode. According to data, over 11 million people have tuned in to watch its third series. That is a lot of people that writer Sally Wainwright has to impress.

Ahead of the series' grand finale, viewers were desperate to see how Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire) would reunite with Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton) and when the moment finally came, it left them screaming at their TV screens. Following a killing spree of 'friend' Darius Knezevic's heavies, Tommy was left injured. He then proceeded to make his way to Catherine's house carrying a petrol can.

Catherine, herself, had fallen asleep in an armchair after looking at photos of her late daughter (whom Tommy had abused). As the police sergeant slept, the camera panned to reveal Tommy at the window clutching a petrol cannister. Viewers took to social media to air their thoughts with one viewer saying: "This is one of the most sinister shots on TV I've ever seen actually".

"What a way to make people even more nervous about what might happen!" said one, while a second fan wrote: "Screaming WAKE UP at the tv."

A third added: "Literally don't think I've breathed for about 2 mins now." Another tweet read: "Wake up Catherine, he's in your house, with petrol."

But a fifth added: "There's no bloody way a copper who thinks a murderer is out to get them sits with their back to a window."

Happy Valley was first released in 2014 and series two in 2016 and both received universal acclaim and became an instant hit with viewers and critics alike. You can watch the series in its entirety on BBC iPlayer now. For more TV and showbiz stories, subscribe to our newsletter here.
