UPDATE: Here’s a look at the Tennessee Titans’ updated cap space now that the Julio Jones release is official.
The Tennessee Titans will see some salary cap relief this week, as the majority of the money that was to be allocated to wide receiver Julio Jones will come off the books.
Jones was designated as a post-June 1 release, which means $9.5 million of his 2022 salary will come off the books, leaving Tennessee with a $2.8 million dead-cap charge.
There was a ton of hype surrounding Jones in his first season, but he never met those expectations thanks to injury and his making a minimal impact when healthy, leading to his release. Jones remains on the open market.
According to Over the Cap, the Titans have $3.1 million in cap space before the move becomes official, so assuming that’s correct they’ll have over $12 million to work with.
With the money freed up, we’re looking at a few possibilities for how the Titans can use the money.
One of those have to do with the team inking their remaining unsigned draft picks, of which there are two: quarterback Malik Willis and cornerback Roger McCreary.
Also, Tennessee might allocate some of those funds for a new veteran wide receiver, something the team could use with so many question marks at the position going into 2022.
The only piece of Julio that will be left in Tennessee after Thursday is the dead-cap hit he carries. Jones’ short and disappointing tenure is just the latest in a long line of veteran receivers not working out in Nashville.
