A teenage girl has died after the minibus she was travelling in collided with a car in North Yorkshire.

The crash occurred just before 12.30pm when the minibus, carrying the girl and eight other passengers aged 16 to 18, collided with a Hyundai i10 at a junction on Toulston Lane in Tadcaster, close to Tadcaster grammar school.

Police said the girl died at the scene. Another passenger, also a teenage girl, was taken to hospital with serious injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

The other passengers, including the man driving the minibus, suffered minor injuries.

Officers have arrested the driver of the car, a 40-year-old woman, in connection with the investigation.

In a statement, police appealed for witnesses or motorists with dashcam footage to come forward and said Toulston Lane remains closed to traffic as police inquiries continue.

“We are not in a position to identify the girl at this time,” the police statement said. “We are continuing to support her family and further updates will be issued when appropriate to do so.

“We urge everyone to respect the family’s wish to grieve in private.”

Tadcaster grammar school sent a message to parents warning them it will be shut on Tuesday as the site “will not be safe for students”, the BBC reported.
