Teen kills self due to fear of maths exam in Vijayawada

VIJAYAWADA: A 17-year-old intermediate first year student, who was afraid of mathematics examination paper, allegedly committed suicide a day before the public examination on Wednesday. The incident, however, came to light on Thursday.

According to the police, the minor girl, resident of Srinivasa Nagar in Tadigadapa here, had a phobia for mathematics. She was not sure if she would pass the mathematics examination. The police said the girl had confided to her parents that she would not clear the mathematics paper. The girl had been upset since the intermediate examinations started earlier this month. The mathematics paper was scheduled for May 11 but the state government had postponed it in view of the supercyclone in the Bay of Bengal.

Her parents told police that she was weak in mathematics since her childhood. The police said there was no foul play behind the incident and the suicide was related to mathematics phobia.

The police said the girl ended her life by hanging herself from a ceiling fan after her parents left for their offices.

Though there have been several instances of students ending life after failing in the public examinations, this is a rare incident where the student committed suicide without appearing for the test.
