MUMBAI: The Central cyber police on Thursday apprehended a junior college student for allegedly creating a fake Instagram account and posting obscene photographs and remarks to her 21-year-old boyfriend’s former girlfriend.
The 17-year-old accused had used the mobile number of her boyfriend’s father, who had died three years ago, to create the fake account. She has been sent to a correction home after being counselled.
The case was registered with Mahim police in 2021 amid the pandemic-induced restrictions. In February this yearm the Central cyber police took up the case and DCP (cyber) Rashmi Karandikar supervised senior inspector Kishore Shinde, assistant inspector Pravin Mohite, sub-inspector Suyog Amrutkar, and staff who tracked the teenager and handed her to Mahim police.
Shinde said the girl did not want her boyfriend to reunite with his former girlfriend, also aged 21. “She used her boyfriend’s dead father’s mobile number to create the Instagram account and repeatedly posted obscene photos and lewd messages to the victim. She was tracked with the help of technical assistance. Her parents were called to the police station and she was counselled in front of them,” he said.
