Taylor Swift fans are known for their ability to dissect lyrics and analyze Easter eggs hidden in the superstar’s songs — but the singer says it sometimes goes too far.
Swift, 36, was discussing the writing process for her notoriously specific lyrics in a recent feature for The New York Times Magazine’s 30 Greatest Living American Songwriters profile when she admitted that it bothers her when her devoted fanbase analyzes the subject of her hit songs instead of recognizing the craft behind them.
“There's corners of my fanbase who are gonna take things to a really extreme place,” the singer-songwriter told the outlet in a video interview published Tuesday. “There's nothing I can do about that. There's people who are gonna try to, like, do detective work, figure out the details — who is that about? What is this?”
She continued: “When it gets a little bit weird for me is when people act like it's a paternity test. Like, ‘This song's about that person.’ Because I'm like, ‘That dude didn't write the song, I did.’ But that's part of it.”
Some of Swift’s biggest hits throughout her decades-long career have been inspired by her high-profile romances — or the media’s obsession with them, as demonstrated with “Blank Space.”
Now engaged to NFL star Travis Kelce, Swift has dated celebrities in the past including Joe Alwyn, Matty Healy, Harry Styles, Tom Hiddleston, Calvin Harris and Jake Gyllenhaal.
Although plenty of her songs are rumored to be inspired by her love life, Swift takes inspiration everywhere: her best friend Selena Gomez revealed last month that Swift has written two songs about her, including her 2020 song “Dorothea.”
Swift’s well-documented knack for writing songs about heartbreak helped to carve out her place as one of the most successful musical artists in the world, with four Grammy Awards for Album of the Year under her belt and billionaire status achieved in 2024.
Explaining how she handles the idea of fans using her songwriting to pick apart her love life, Swift told The New York Times Magazine that she stays focused on creating art that is true to herself.
“You have to hold tight to your perception of your art and your relationship with it,” she said and then mimed blowing it away. “There it goes. Hope you like it. And if you don't now, hope you do in five years, and if you never do, then I was doing it for me anyway.”
