Tasmania Police have implored a man wanted over the alleged shooting of a police vehicle to give himself up, saying they believe he may have "repainted" his car to avoid detection.
On Tuesday, police released the name and photo of 33-year-old Robert George Greig, who they named as a person of interest in relation to shots fired at officers who were attending a call-out near New Norfolk, north of Hobart, late on Monday.
Today, police issued a plea for Mr Greig to "make contact with police and hand himself in".
Commander Tim Dooley said police wanted to "resolve this incident safely for everyone", including Mr Greig.
"Mr Greig, please make contact with police so we can safely resolve the situation for you, your family and your loved ones," Commander Dooley said.
"If he can hear this or see this … the message is that we want to take him into custody safely. We can do it in a safe, secure way, with reassurance to him and the [officers that would be involved].
"Police would like to acknowledge the support and assistance of the local community as we carry out our investigations. We appreciate their patience and understanding, and we are working hard to safely resolve this situation as soon as we can."
Holden 4WD may have 'some parts repainted'
Police searched houses and properties around Brighton and Elderslie overnight, looking for Mr Greig and a blue Holden Colorado 4WD with registration plate YD08IP.
"We can't discount the possibility that the vehicle may have been modified with some parts repainted with an undercoat grey colour," Commander Dooley said.
He said police would be "targeting a number of areas including the Brighton and Elderslie region today as part of an ongoing search to locate Mr Greig".
Members of the public who have seen Mr Greig or the vehicle he is believed to be driving are asked to not approach him but instead call police on 131 444 or report anonymously via the Crime Stoppers website.
Police say shots were fired at two police vehicles late on Monday night as they responded to an alleged family violence incident.
No-one was injured in the incident, but the police union said up to six shots had been fired, narrowly missing officers and damaging windows on a police car.
