Tamil Nadu: Man, 32, arrested for impersonating friend in exam

TRICHY: The Trichy rural police arrested a 32-year-old man for impersonating his friend in BA economics arrear exam at Arignar Anna Government Arts College in Musiri on Friday.

The accused has been identified as D Viswanathan of Jambumadai. Invigilator and assistant professor V Palanisamy, 42, caught Viswanathan red-handed while the latter was writing the examination on behalf of his friend P Gopinath.

Sub-inspector of police (SI) D Nagaraj said that Viswanathan had submitted the hall ticket with the photograph of Gopinath.

While Viswanathan was writing the exam, the invigilator verified the hall ticket and caught him.

Viswanathan told the police that Gopinath and he were studying in the college from 2009 to 2012 and became friends. While Viswanathan completed a postgraduate degree, Gopinath failed to pass the BA economics exam but joined a defence force on the basis of his Class X mark. Viswanathan said he had written the exam for his friend to help him pass.

Police tried to contact Gopinath but in vain. “We have to find out in which defence force Gopinath is serving. The role of Gopinath in the matter is to be probed,” said Nagaraj.
