The primary function of sweaters in winter is to keep us warm. Although for us fashion folk, form also comes into play. Yes, we want our knits to keep the bitter cold at bay, but we also want them to make some kind of stylish statement. As we inch closer to the end of winter, our chunky sweaters and turtlenecks are starting to wear a little thin. Perhaps even literally. At this point of the season, there doesn't seem to be much point in investing in new knits that cover us from the chin to halfway down our legs. Instead, we're embracing sweaters with revealing necklines.
Also fitting for Valentine's Day, these racy numbers allow us to show some serious skin. (Unless layering something underneath becomes necessary if temperatures take another nosedive.) Some can still be sported solo — just don't bend over to touch your toes — some need a little assistance. Like a bra or sports bra you don't mind partially showing off.
The other big benefit? These babies will work in spring as well. Usually, sweaters are cast aside once the weather takes a more positive turn. In this case, the included ventilation helps keep the wearer from getting too hot, while still letting them look hot. Which makes the prices easier to bear.
Speaking of cost, there's actually a pretty even mix of designer and less-expensive fare. On the higher end is Alaïa's cashmere-blend, heart-shaped offering. Alexander McQueen's cropped cardigan settles at the middle of the bust. Then there's Bottega Veneta's knit polo that drops dramatically. All will run you over $1,000. All are worth it, but we understand if you can't afford them right now. If your budget is $500 and under, we're flush with options. From Rick Owens' exaggerated V to Ottolinger's barely-there hoodie and LESET's plunging cropped take. Got even less to spend? Go with Versace Jeans Couture's double cut-out turtleneck, a somewhat flashy U-neck sweater, a rounded V-neck or a cool bustier knit top. Obviously, the lower the cost, the more you save or the more you can buy.
