Sydney Sweeney is sharing the naked truth.
The “Euphoria” star, 24, is clearing up some misinterpreted quotes she gave earlier this year about filming Cassie’s nude scenes in the Emmy-winning HBO hit.
“I never asked [creator-writer-director Sam Levinson] to cut any [nude] scenes,” Sweeney, 24, said in a new interview with Teen Vogue.
The clarifications come after Sweeney told The Independent in January that “Sam is amazing.”
She pointing at the time to “moments where Cassie was supposed to be shirtless and I would tell Sam, ‘I don’t really think that’s necessary here.’ He was like, ‘OK, we don’t need it.’ I’ve never felt like Sam has pushed it on me or was trying to get a nude scene into an HBO show. When I didn’t want to do it, he didn’t make me.”
But, she told Teen Vogue, those remarks “got twisted and turned and it became its own beast.”
Though the recently engaged “White Lotus” and “Voyeurs” star was trying to convey “how respectful Sam is and how incredible of a director he is,” others incorrectly interpreted the comments as the actress having requested Levinson cut unnecessary scenes.
In fact, she believes the nudity shown on “Euphoria” is “important to the storyline and the character” of Cassie, who in large part feels defined by her relationships with men and sex.
“There’s a purpose to what the character is going through,” she told the magazine. “That’s the character. We all get naked in real life. We show this character’s life and what they’re going through. Cassie’s body is a different form of communication for her.”
Sweeney’s remarks are among the many that have been analyzed during the show’s second season, which concluded late last month and is set to return for a highly-anticipated third season.
There’s been plenty of talk from stars Maude Apatow, Jacob Elordi and Minka Kelly about the long hours on set of the teen drama and sudden script changes, as well as reported tensions between Levinson and Barbie Ferreira, leading to fewer appearances from her character. And avowed fans of the series rarely mince words about its controversial creator.
