Nathan Vikatos, 45, has been charged with murder over the alleged stabbing death of a three-year-old boy in a Sydney unit.
Police were called to the unit on Washington Avenue, Riverwood, about 4pm on Wednesday where they found the child already deceased.
Mr Vikatos was found with self-inflicted wounds and remains in hospital in a stable condition.
He was formally arrested at hospital on Friday and charged with murder.
Mr Vikatos has a partner who has been assisting police.
Superintendent Sheridan Waldau said on Wednesday the attack on the child appeared to be a “horrific” domestic violence-related incident.
“We attend 140,000 (domestic violence) incidents every year and unfortunately some of them end up in homicides,” she said.
Prevention of Domestic Violence Minister Jodie Harrison said the child’s death was “shocking and tragic”.
She offered her condolences to the family and friends.
“This week has seen two horrendous examples of families impacted by domestic violence,” she told parliament during Question Time.
Mr Vikatos was refused bail and will appear at Parramatta Bail Court via audio-video link on Saturday.
