Swansea City headlines as Steve Bruce defiant amid West Brom 'collapse' and former manager sacked

Your Swansea City headlines for Wednesday, February 23.

Bruce upbeat amid Baggies' slide

Steve Bruce remains confident that Swansea's next opponents West Brom can challenge for promotion this season, despite winning just one of their previous 12 matches.

The Baggies took the lead against Middlesbrough on Tuesday night but were ultimately beaten 2-1 at the Riverside Stadium following a poor second-half showing.

Ahead of Monday's meeting with the Swans, West Brom are six points adrift of the play-off places and 12 behind the automatic promotion spots.

But Bruce believes home form could be crucial as the Hawthorns outfit bid to transform their fortunes.

“I am still convinced we can turn it around," he said.

"We have eight of the 13 games at home, we have done well at home but we have to improve away.

"We have to get that first win under our belts and hopefully we can get it, we have a long wait until Monday, but the signs of how we want to play are there."

Speaking ahead of West Brom's contest with Middlesbrough, Sky Sports pundit and presenter David Prutton admitted he held serious concerns over the direction of the Baggies.

"West Brom's season is collapsing and Steve Bruce has so far proved unable to stem the tide," he said.

"Games come at you so quickly in this league, and just a point and no goals from three games [now one point, one goal and no wins from four games] has been a disappointing start. I think they might score at the Riverside, but I can't see them getting much else."

Kick-off in the contest between West Brom and Swansea is at 8pm on Monday.

Highlights show change

ITV have won the rights to broadcast EFL highlights for the next two seasons.

A roundup of best action from the Championship, League One and League Two is currently screened by Quest every Saturday night.

However, the EFL have confirmed ITV 4 will now have the 9pm Saturday night prime time slot to show highlights from the organisation's three domestic leagues, as well as for Carabao Cup and Papa John’s Trophy action.

It's stated that each show broadcast by ITV will "feature every goal from every EFL fixture plus detailed analysis from a panel of expert pundits".

EFL chief executive and former Swansea chairman Trevor Birch said: “With 1,891 matches played across the season, it’s crucial for the EFL that the very best of our match action is widely accessible and we are delighted that ITV will show highlights of our games for the next two years.

“As an experienced major broadcaster with a comprehensive sports portfolio, ITV’s commitment to high quality coverage will showcase the breadth and depth of our competitions to football supporters all over the country.”

Bournemouth food donated

Swansea donated more than 500 meals to those in need in the region after their clash with Bournemouth was postponed.

Russell Martin's side were due to host the Cherries in south Wales on Tuesday night but the contest was called off due to damage sustained at the Swansea.com Stadium as a result of recent storms.

Following the news of the postponement, the Swans were eager to ensure that meals already prepared for the night of the game did not go to waste.

Matt’s Café, Zac’s Place, The Wallich and St Mary’s Church, who all support homeless people in the city of Swansea, received food donations on Tuesday.

“As soon as Tuesday’s game against Bournemouth was postponed we contacted several local charities where the food could go to a good home,” said chief executive Julian Winter.

“We are a club that cares about the community we serve and I’d like to thank the staff here who acted quickly to ensure the food went to several superb charities locally.

“All four charities do brilliant work on a daily basis all year round and we are glad that we could play a part in ensuring that those who needed the food most were able to receive it.”

The fixture has been rearranged to take place on Tuesday, April 26. Kick-off is at 7:45pm.

Former manager axed

Kenny Jackett has left his role as manager of Leyton Orient.

The 31-cap Wales international - who managed Swansea between 2004 and 2007 - took charge of The O's in May last year but leaves the club in 18th place in League Two.

A club statement read: "The club can confirm that it has parted company with Manager Kenny Jackett with immediate effect.

"Assistant manager Joe Gallen, who joined the club with Kenny Jackett in the summer, will also depart his role.

"We would like to place on record our thanks to Kenny and Joe, and wish them all the best for the future.

"Further details regarding who will take temporary control of first team affairs will be communicated in due course."

Jackett was pivotal in Swansea's rise up the divisions, with the Watford-born manager overseeing a promotion, two FAW Premier Cup triumphs and a Football League Trophy success during his time as boss.
